The Other Family Doctor: A Veterinarian Explores What Animals Can Teach Us About Love, Life, and Mortality, by Karen Fine, DVM

In this beautifully written memoir, Dr. Fine shares insightful, moving, and enlightening stories of her more than 25-years working with dogs (and other pets). While the “lead character” of each story is an animal, the book is as much a look at the human condition as it is at the busy practice of a veterinarian who is passionate about her work.

Inspired by the grandfather’ practice of medicine and his philosophy that a doctor needs to know the patient’s family and home environment to be able to provide the best care, she too decided to create a practice that provided house-calls. The difference: her grandfather was a medical doctor treating humans, while Fine is a veterinary doctor treating our furry friends.

Some of these chapters will make you laugh out-loud, others will bring on the tears. Either way, you will enter Fine’s world and marvel, as she does, as what animals can teach us about life and death, and love.
